It is said that a good photographer has the ability to either make or break a photograph. Possessing the knowledge that is necessary to shoot people in photographs is very important, more important than owning expensive equipment. It is not necessary to have a high powered, very expensive camera or equipment. If the photographer has the talent and ability, there is no limit to his/her success with just a simple inexpensive digital camera. One very important piece of equipment needed is a tripod and so much can be created with lights.
If the photographer is a traveler to other countries than the United States, it is important to have knowledge of the culture you are visiting. This will be beneficial when requesting to be allowed to photograph a person of that culture. In some countries the people look forward to being photographed; others do not. So, it is always advisable to ask permission before photographing a person. This is especially true if the person is a child. In the United States and all countries, permission is not necessary if the person is only a minor subject in the photograph.
It is exciting to photograph a person or even a group, because people are so expressive. Getting the person relaxed and comfortable is necessary in order to get a shot to be proud of. Lighting of course has a big part in creating a great person photograph. With adjustable lighting the photographer can create either a very sharp image or create different moods with the shadows. High shutter speeds tend to make the image clearer and sharper. A really great people photograph captures a mood and can tell a story.
