How to Become a Professional Photographer

Photographs hold memories frozen in time. They are an important part of society, as pictures withstand the sands of time, evoking emotion year after year. Our photos are treasured, beloved, priceless, and irreplaceable testaments to our lives, and perhaps one of the single most important items we have in our possession. Professional photographers add to the intrigue and emotion of a photograph as the all important images are caught in glory and time. It takes patience, skill, and an eye for photography to become a great professional photographer.
A two or four year degree will teach you a great deal about the technical aspect of photography, and you will also learn about the zone system and basics of how light and chemistry affects film. If you are lucky enough to find a great school, and can afford it, this is a great way to get your photography education. If you choose not to go the college route, there are other ways to become a professional. Photography is about art and craft, as well, and on the job training is priceless.
Speak to many people in your chosen field. Find out how they received their education and solicit any advice they offer. Take classes at an art school to get a better idea about light and focus. There are even special photography schools and classes that will ensure your education in photography arts. Purchase the best equipment you can afford and practice, practice, practice. Learn all you can about equipment, and study every picture you take. Often, you will see where you need to improve. Be as original as possible and build a quality portfolio. Make CDs of all your work and copy write it. Finally, take courses in small business management and keep excellent records.
