Becoming a Professional Photographer

Becoming a professional photographer requires a lot more than just taking pictures. There is not only the creative side, there is the business aspect. To start, if you are in school, add photography and marketing as subjects. If you are not a student, then the library would be an inexpensive place to start reading, since they have books on the subjects and computers to do research on the internet. You need to also learn the technical aspect of photography, like how chemistry and light affect a picture. You can read up on Art History if you wish, you would find out how the master painters used light in the past. What equipment to buy is also important, since there is a lot available and can be expensive. Find out all there is to know about the equipment you have bought, it is important to become efficient with it.

Then, take a lot of pictures, the more you take, the more experienced you become in choosing composition, light, balance, and the settings on your camera will become second nature. In many situations you have only an instant to catch a moment in time; you won’t hesitate when you see something that you want to photograph. You can analyze prominent photographers’ works via newspapers, magazines, exhibitions, photography books etc., there are a lot out there to view. Look at them with a professional photographers’ eye. Then give yourself an assignment to see what you can do or better yet, get “on the job” experience.

If finding a position as an assistant is difficult, become one to a prominent local professional photographer for free. Why you question? What is a better school than that? You would learn a lot; it is only temporary, and probably would open doors to assignments or lead to your own small business to start. The world is constantly changing, as a photographer, go capture the glory of these moments in time.
