An average photographer earns around $24,000 a year and a credited school graduate earns about $26,000 per year. You can make about $2,000 more a year if you go to a school. Of course the average education cost of the people who got jobs that went to a school was around $74,000 each. The bad news is that a degree from a school usually only gets you huge student loan debts. It's nice to have a degree from a photo school, but it costs you more in money and lost career time than it will be worth. If you have what it takes, you can teach yourself much faster. It's all about being in the field, practicing and learning through trial and error.
Photography is one of those wonderful activities that can be self-taught. You either have the eye for photography or you don't. Far more important than learning photography, is to learn what you really need to know, which is to learn how to run your own business in a very competitive world. Almost anyone can learn to capture interesting and beautiful photos. Besides the artistic talent of photography itself, you must be able to market and sell your photos. You must find an appealing way to present and sell your pictures.
There are millions of photographers out there looking for work. Photographers don't usually earn a company a lot of money. This means there isn't much money to employ a photographers. When there are so many photographers who will work for next to nothing, employers don't need to pay very much to fill any positions. Consider becoming a professional freelance photographer as a side job, and work your way up.
