Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz is a world famous photographer that has generated and has helped to produce four dozen or more Oscar nominations for actors such as Gus Van Sant, Sean Penn, John Shanley, Meryl Streep, and others. Her portraits have adorned magazine covers for more than 30 years.

She was born Anna-Lou Leibovitz on October 2, 1949, in Westbury, Connecticut, one of six children of Sam and Marilyn Leibovitz. Her early life was spent on various military bases since her father was an Air Force Lieutenant. She attended the San Francisco Art Institute, studying painting and taking photography courses at night. In 1970 she started her career at Rolling Stone magazine, doing a cover story on John Lennon in 1973, her first major story. She worked for the next 10 years at Rolling Stone, becoming chief photographer in 1973. During this time Leibovitz shot over 142 covers and essays, including an account of Richard Nixon?s resignation and the 1975 Rolling Stones world tour. In 1983 and 1998 Leibovitz worked for Vanity Fair and Vogue magazines, respectively. She also produced successful advertising campaigns for American Express, the Gap, Givenchy, The Sopranos, and the Milk Board.

Leibovitz later received honors from the International Center of Photography and received the Bernard College Medal of Distinction and Commandeur in Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. She also won two awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors. Leibovitz was awarded the title of Living Legend by the Library of Congress and one of the top innovators by Smithsonian Magazine. She currently resides in New York with her three children.
