How to Become a Professional Photographer

To many considering a career as a professional photographer, the life seems glamorous and rewarding. The truth is that to become a sought after professional photographer you must be willing to take the diligent steps necessary to get there. The first step is some kind of formal education on the basics of photography and the camera itself. Some professionals swear by a four year degree while others advise searching out a really good photography school for the basics and then getting your practical experience in an internship or apprenticeship atmosphere. These methods of acquiring ?experience? and on the job training are crucial if you intend to go out on your own.

Most photographers are not hired on a full time basis but as a freelance professional. The cost of paying a photographer during the down times is prohibitive but it in turn gives the photographer the opportunity to grow by learning different ways of operation. You?ll learn a broad spectrum about the business end plus the many preferences of equipment. Your equipment is not a cost but an investment in what will become a lifelong career. One major piece of advice passed down is not to buy a camera with only automatic settings. In order for you to be original and unique you need to design your own custom settings that you will create yourself from the exposure to other photographer?s preferences in settings.

Of all the advice given by current professional photographers these are the most stressed. Always have your camera with you and practice different shots with light, angles and subjects. Enter photography contests, critique your work as you would a competitor?s and keep a binder of questionable shots so you can correct the problem when you run across the answer. Don?t be shy about asking a business or store to sponsor an exhibit for you. They get a great return in traffic so everyone wins. Photography is a way of life for the true photographer. Every view of their eye is framed and considered as a picture for posterity.
