Flash Photography in Different Environments

Being a photographer, whether you're new to the scene or a seasoned professional, it seems that you will always be looking for the right lighting for the perfect photo.

Even if you're out on a very sunny day, it seems that it is rarely perfect. Will you use the flash over expose light on your object with too much flash? Or, would you or could you use the flash to have it not look like a flash? Would you diffuse it or bounce it off of a wall, ceiling or ground?

When using a flash outdoors, it seems you might want to try to use the flash to lift shadows and to try to avoid shadows on the face or eyes. Try to use the flash as a fill-light.

When photos are taken outdoors on subjects, you might want to set the camera for ambient light. You might need to try something to balance the shadow areas with the brighter sunlit areas.

You can also set your exposure on your flash so that the flash comes out a little less bright. If you are using a SLR, you can use the automatic fill flash feature that you can select by pressing the flash icon and choosing which setting that would work as it cycles through the selections.

It would also be a good choice to study and to practice on your flash technique to have every shot come out perfect, or close to it.
