Getting paid to do what you love is probably the most sought after goal in people?s lives. For some, photography is that something they love, but how can you make a living at it? Do you need a degree? Should you have the best equipment money can buy?
First of all, some advisers on the subject think that you should get a four-year degree in photography to be a professional photographer while others think you can learn what you need to know through books. Both choices have their advantages. The former can be very costly at the same time rob you of four years to work and make money. It is suggested that you find a really good professional photographer and become their apprentice. On-the-job training is one of the best ways to learn. However, if you find someone who doesn?t want to share his or her secrets or tricks of the trade, get out of there immediately and find someone who will.
Another piece of advice is don?t buy the best photography equipment money can buy. Uninteresting photos taken from an expensive camera will not make more money than a great, creative photo from a less expensive one. Having good business sense will get you off to a good start.
Once you have the knowledge and the equipment, how do you become a professional photographer? Take lots of pictures and submit them everywhere. Start with your favorite magazines. Send photographs to the editor and if you can, write articles to go along with your photographs. It will save the editor a lot of time and if the work is good, you will get published. This will work for many different genres like fashion, sports, or travel.
The best thing you can do is shoot what you love. If you do, it will show in your work and when the right people see your work, the money will come.
