Canon Powershot G9

There are two main types of digital cameras. Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras tend to be the preferred choice of professional photographers and serious shutterbugs. They can take pictures instantly and give complete manual control. On the downside, SLRs tend to be heavy and bulky. The other option is compact digital cameras, which are small, lightweight, and cheaper, although they don't have quite the same level of performance. Many of the features on compact cameras are also automated, sacrificing control.

The Canon Powershot G9 is the best of both worlds. It's a compact digital camera that possesses many of the same benefits as the very best in SLRs.

While most compact cameras require a second or two to focus and take a picture, the G9 is lightning quick. Even though it falls just short of the instantaneous SLRs, it easily surpasses the response time of all other compact cameras on the market today. It's built to capture action shots.

The G9 also delivers all the manual controls of an SLR. Novice users can still rely on trusty automatic settings. But more advanced photographers will love the aperture and shutter-priority modes, giving them the kind of control they simply can't get with compact cameras. And like SLRs, the G9 is sturdy and solidly built, while still managing to retain the easy portability of compacts.

The Canon Powershot G9 retails for around $450.
