Shooting Portraits

Shooting portraits can be a tricky thing, which is why there are so many digital photographs that do not do justice to a particular subject. In order to shoot a proper photograph, a photographer must take many different things into account, and you must also have the pertinent equipment. Some of the best portraits are shot by those that understand the power of lighting, and photographers that know how to capture just the right amount of shadow are often the artists that stand out.

When you are trying to capture a portrait, you do not always have to make the subject look glamorous. Sometimes, emphasizing wrinkles, lines, and certain facial features will make an interesting composition, and these are often the types of photographs that sell. To begin shooting a portrait, you must first decide upon the particular features that you want to stress, and then you will have to use light to your advantage in order to capture the shot. If you want to make someone appear flawless, try and shoot on a day that is slightly cloudy in order to diffuse the light. Alternately, if you want to focus on wrinkles and angles, make sure that your light comes from the side or from the top. Also, make sure to frame just a person?s face (sometimes neck and shoulders too) using a zoom lens in order to capture a great portrait.

Portraits can really show a person?s true features, and some portraits tend to showcase a particular lifestyle as well. For example, a photograph of an old man that brings out certain wrinkles may show a happy life, if the wrinkles are in the right place, or it may show a rough life depending upon the types of features that stand out. When you try to capture a portrait, forget about shooting a glamor shot, and try to see a person through different eyes. Remember, you are an artist, so go ahead and shoot a portrait that reflects everything that you see.
