Awards for Photography

Many artists refuse to consider themselves as such unless their work has been properly recognized in the form of an award or publication. While recognition is not the sole judge of talent, it surely helps to augment an artist's status as such.

One well-known photography contest is the Pilsner-Urquell International Photography Awards. The contest has two parts: one for professional photographers and one for non-professional photographers, from all over the world. A winner is picked for each of the eight categories: Advertising, Architectural, Editorial, Fine Art, Nature, and People Photographer of the Year, as well as Photography Book of the Year (a professional category only) and Photographer of the Year in the Special category. This year, they also introduced a new category, Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year, the deadline of which was 30 June. The winners in these categories then compete for a.) the title of International Photographer of the Year, b.) the Lucie Award, and c.) a cash prize of $10,000.

Entering is easy. You simply fill out an entry form and mail it, with your entry and a fee, to the IPA. Entries can also be submitted online. You can submit several photographs in one category, or one photograph in each category you desire. For professional photographers the fees are $35 for each category and $60 for each series or book; for non-professional photographers the fees are $25 and $50 respectively; and for students, $15 and $30 respectively. You must be 21 to enter, and material submission rules vary for professionals and non-professionals. For complete rules, see the IPA website. The deadline for the next contest is 30 April, 2008.
